his year’s series of new iPhones brings four new devices to the iPhone pool. This time, Apple has forayed into the more affordable smartphone section for the first time. The new iPhone XR is that affordable choice, which will put an end to the budget user’s dilemma. The iPhone XR is Apple’s answer for a device for the masses, which was long overdue. It presents a great deal with plenty of features, looks, and above-average battery life, with some minor compromises in features and styling.

iPhone XR: DESIGN
The iPhone XR appears to be a visibly cheaper product that shows in some areas. Firstly, it’s thicker from the other iPhones. Secondly, there’s a wider bezel around the screen, purposely for it’s LED backlights. But this doesn’t make it any less of a looker. The perfectly rounded edges and corners carry some extremely detailed work on themselves. Apple has also managed to achieve a Fun yet Elegant look with a seven-layer color process. And the all-glass back of the XR comes in black, white, blue, yellow, coral and red, which all look great. It comes with a lesser IP67 rating and it can withstand 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, compared to 2 meters for the same amount of time for the IP68-rated iPhone XS. The frame is made of matte finish aluminum instead of stainless steel. In terms of size, it sits between the iPhone X & Xs. It also supports dual sim connectivity.
iPhone XR: DISPLAY
It comes with a Liquid Retina: LED-backlit IPS LCD. The display is big enough with 6.08 inches in size but may seem a little bigger because of the bezels. It has a lower resolution and pixel density as compared to an OLED display, but it fairs well as an LCD display with a 326 ppi pixel density and a max brightness of 625 cd/m². The display is a key compromise here as the XR is a cheaper iPhone. Also, the 3D touch is missing here and instead the Haptic Touch feature has been included to make up for its loss. Still, the display is more than satisfying.
iPhone XR: SOFTWARE
The iPhone XR gets the same powerful iOS 12 as it’s other siblings. Features like Group FaceTime, which allows you to make video calls with up to 32 people and Depth Control in real-time preview, which lets you adjust the bokeh effect in portraits as you’re shooting, are the same as the other devices. Removal of the 3D touch also takes away a few of the features which won’t be missed by almost everyone.
iPhone XR: PERFORMANCE
The iPhone XR can conveniently do all the that the iPhone XS and XS Max can do thanks to the same powerful A12 Bionic chip. Even with a lesser 3GB RAM, it manages to do pretty well on the benchmark tests as well as the real-world day to day usage without any hiccups.
iPhone XR: BATTERY LIFE
The iPhone XR gets a sizable battery of 2942 mAh to keep it juiced up for a whole day. Thanks to its power-efficient A12 chip and a reasonable screen resolution, it can easily last a day or two if the usage isn’t heavy all the time. Its battery is one of the virtues of XR which puts it over the other iPhones.
iPhone XR: CAMERA
In the imaging department, it gets the same front camera as the iPhones of this year, but a different rear shooter with only a single lens setup.
There’s a 7-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera on the front, and a single-lens 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera on the back, which all use Apple’s new Smart HDR system, same as all the other models. Since the software features like the A12 chip’s new ISP (Image Signal Processor) and the Neural Engine, and the camera app are all the exact same as Xs & Xs Max on the XR, the camera performs sufficiently well for a single-lens camera.
iPhone XR: VALUE FOR MONEY
With its aggressive pricing, it is still in the expensive category according to its specifications. But the overall package is set to appeal to the Apple users who are looking for a budget upgrade from the older models. Its actual worth is too good to ignore.
